Impromptu maternity shoot – Contax 645 w/ P25

When my wife was in her third trimester. We did three semi-planned shoots. One was on a beach (I think I forgot to bring batteries, or a memory card, so I ended up shooting it on my M9). The other was in our living room with some Colorspike lights, and the last one was in a forest near our apartment. I’m mainly going to focus on pictures shot in the forest, because they turned out alright.

I have an adapter that allows me to shoot Pentax 67 lenses on my Contax, and I’m pretty sure I used the Pentax 105mm for the indoor shots. For the shots in the forest, I used the Contax 80mm F2. Both shoots were shot exclusively using a Phase One P25. Minimal editing on both (exposure, tint, and maybe contrast and highlights on some).

Here’s some of the photos we took (apologies for the redundancy):

I mentioned this in a previous post, but I’ve been a huge proponent of CCD chips. Fuck, I started a camera rental business that focuses on CCD camera rentals (www.ccdcine16.com). I didn’t realize that the look that I like is most likely from Kodak CCD chips from the late 2000’s though. Thinking about my favorite cameras… The Ikonoskop (Kodak CCD chip), The D16 (Kodak CCD chip), The Leica M9 (you guessed it… Kodak CCD chip). All of them are relatively close in age as well, so that era is what I’m referring to. I have four other CCD cameras… one made by Sony (RD1), one made by Fuji (S5 Pro), and two made by Dalsa (Aptus-II 12R, and IQ180). The Kodak sensors are different. They are all great though.

I just really like the colors that come out of this sensor. Especially the greens. I feel the same way when I watch a video that was shot on the D16 or Ikonoskop. There’s something special about the color that is hard to describe, and even harder to replicate using other cameras. I think that this (blurry, out of focus) photo best demonstrates what I’m talking about:

My wife was fantastic. Especially at the beach. I drove us there around 5AM, only for me to have forgotten batteries… You guys will have to ignore the cheap floral crown. For the next baby, we’re going to do a proper photo shoot, this one was a tad rushed. For anyone wondering, the protea and rose flowers were meant to represent our respective nations (South Africa, and the United States).
