Throwaways: Experiments with medium format

I have recently, within the last two or so years, been lucky enough to purchase some of the things that I’ve really been wanting to for a long time. At the top of that list is a Contax 645, which along with my Hasselblad bodies has been my entry into the realm of hybrid medium format bodies. The idea of only shooting film kept me…

Impromptu maternity shoot – Contax 645 w/ P25

When my wife was in her third trimester. We did three semi-planned shoots. One was on a beach (I think I forgot to bring batteries, or a memory card, so I ended up shooting it on my M9). The other was in our living room with some Colorspike lights, and the last one was in a forest near our apartment. I’m mainly going to focus…

Throwaways: First roll through my Hasselblad 500C/M

Sharing an entire roll with someone is still something that is a bit uncomfortable for me. I’m going to be starting a YT channel to share more soon, and I do want to show the “missed”, or flubbed shots along with the ones that I’m happy with. I love William Klein’s work, and I posted a short excerpt from one of his documentaries a while…

Old cameras vs. new ones

Category : Gear
Date : February 6, 2016

Right now is a very interesting, and fortuitous time to be a part of the photography world. Good equipment can be bought for very low prices. Digital rot is a real thing, and the advancements being made (for me personally) aren’t exciting enough to convince me to hop on board to buy a new camera. Thorsten Overgaard talks about the Leica Digilux II on his…

New Gear – Fujifilm TX-1 w/90mm and 45mm

It’s not really new, but I’m uploading this post now that I’ve scanned a few rolls. I plan on redoing my portfolio, and making it simpler before I start shopping it, and I wanted to include pictures from this camera. I’m going to upload a few of the pictures that I will not be including in the portfolio in this post. These are the ‘throwaways’…

New Gear: Voigtländer 21mm Ultron f1.8

Category : Gear
Date : February 8, 2015

Finally! A decent lens for one of my favorite cameras. A couple of weeks ago, I purchased the Voigtländer 21mm F1.8 lens. It is a lens that I have wanted for a very long time, and one that makes sense, since I’ll be using it on the APS-C sized Epson R-D1. The lens is built like a tank. I was expecting it to be a lot…

Double Exposures Project – The traveling Contax RX

The above picture is a double exposure made from a picture I took of a man fixing his roof, and another of the Japanese Alps. If you search the hashtag #roofninja, you can see a few others that I made using the same photo. In my closet, I have a wonderful Contax RX with a 45mm pancake lens on it. It is a wonderful camera,…

The company known as Sigma

The company known as Sigma

Sigma is a very interesting company, and I think they have made some very smart and forward-thinking decisions regarding not only its business but the camera industry and the art of photography as a whole. Lets start with their acquisition of Foveon in 2008. The Foveon sensor emulates film in its approach to sensor design. If you’re not familiar with the technology, check it out here….

As an X-Pro1 user, I follow Fujifilm’s releases pretty closely, and was really excited to hear about their new Classic Chrome film simulation that they released a while ago for their newer cameras. Fujifilm has a pretty good track record for updating their products regularly, and even has a campaign around that philosophy called ‘Kaizen’. So I naturally assumed that this new film simulation would…
